Where is my VIN?
Understanding the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
The vehicle identification number (VIN) is a unique 17-character alphanumeric code that serves as a vehicle’s fingerprint. This code varies from model to model and is assigned by the manufacturer to each car.
- The first three characters of the VIN number (WMI) indicate the country of origin and manufacturer of the vehicle. It also reveals the model trim of the vehicle.
- The next five characters (VDS) reveal the specifications of the vehicle, such as the engine type, body style, transmission, and other features and add-ons.
- The VIN number also includes a security digit as the 9th character to verify that the VIN number is accurate.
- The 10th and 11th characters represent the year of manufacture and plant where the vehicle was manufactured.
- The last six digits of the VIN number represent the serial number of the vehicle manufactured by the manufacturer.
